  SSCS2040W Power, Inequality and Social Change

Week 13

Course objectives addressed

Students will demonstrate understanding of social justice issues related to uses of power domestically and globally, as they:
1.  evaluate the efficacy of leadership concerning human rights domestically and globally;
2.   connect learning in the social sciences personally, professionally and civically; and,
3.   identify tools and strategies for engaging in everyday activism concerning social justice issues, including the centrality of reasoned and evidenced scholarly work as a tool for working toward social justice.
Critically research, read and annotate
Research at least six reputable sources about the third generation right to clean, healthy water. Here is more information about the kinds of sources you should look for:
  • at least one source should be about the human right to clean water generally;
  • research specifically the issue of clean water access in these three regions:  Flint, Michigan; Bangladesh; South Africa.
  • find a variety of sources, including perspectives of residents or activists directly involved; all sources should be reputable academic sources;
  • find at least one scholarly journal article that includes a description of a quantitative or qualitative research study about the importance of clean water;
  • your sources should be recent-- at least five sources should be from the last five years.  One source can be older, as long as the information is still relevant.

Critically think about

  • the importance of finding a variety of sources on a topic, including scholarly sources.

Write

A three page, single-spaced human rights report.  Here are the details of the report requirements:
  • The purpose of this formal report is to describe the human right to clean water.  More specifically, you will consider the challenges and responses concerning clean water access in three regions: Flint, Michigan, Bangladesh and South Africa.
  • Use the six sources (minimum) that you have researched for this report
  • This is a formal report.
    • Only include your name on the report; you don’t need a title page.
    • Single-space your work.
    • Use headings and sub-headings to guide the reader through your report.
    • You should have three full pages of text with your fourth page devoted to your references.
  • Begin with an abstract of your report.
    • Here is a guide on how to write an abstract.
  • Include an introductory paragraph.
    • In your introduction, you should establish that access to clean water is a human right—cite at least one source.
    • The last sentence of your introduction should be a one sentence thesis statement.
  • You may choose to use RTW or not for your body paragraphs.
    • You may have 2 or 3 CERs in each paragraph, if you do use RTW.
    • You should use various type of evidence.
    • Of course, you should have ample evidence and reasoning in your report, even though you don’t have to use RTW.  You should cite whenever you use evidence from a source.
    • If you choose to paraphrase take great care—you must truly use your own words and cite.
  • Include a concluding paragraph in which you provide your personal insights on the human right to clean water.
  • Use correct APA citation format and references, using your APA Guide and looking up rules as necessary.
  • Your references should be on the final page of your report--the references do not count as part of the three pages of text required.
  • Proofread x 3.
